Q.) What are Savannah Stone products?
A.) Savannah Stone products are manufactured stones with naturally found colors and the additional advantages of lightweight and ease of installation.   Our products are manufactured using Portland cement, lightweight aggregate and synthetic iron oxide pigment dyes.

Q.) Does Savannah Stone offer installation on our products?

Description of Savannah Stone Products

Q.) Is this real stone?
A.) Savannah Stone products are manufactured (cultured or man made) stones, with several advantages over natural stone.  Advantages are lightweight and ease of installation.

Q.) Does the color go all the way through Savannah Stone products?

A.) Yes. A batch color is blended through out the entire product. Surface mineral nuance colors are applied and integrated in to the product during the cast process.   Since every stone is handmade, colors may vary slightly from a sample board. Please keep this in mind. No two stones are colored exactly alike in nature either!

Q.) How are Savannah Stone products made?

A.) Savannah Stone products are cast in handcrafted molds taken from selected natural stone, using a process which captures every detail of the stone.  The color selections available for a particular stone style are chosen to compliment the stone type.   Even up close, our cultured stones closely resemble natural quarried stone in terms of texture and color.

Q.) What is the average thickness of Savannah Stone products?
A.) Average thickness is 1 ˝ inch. Depending on texture, 1" to 3" is average.

General Information

Q.) Will Savannah Stone products stain if my fireplace smokes?
A.) Possibly, just as natural stone or brick may. If smoke staining is a concern, the stone can be sealed to assist in the removal of the stains.   Smoke stains can often be removed by following the instructions the installation guide.

Q.) Do Savannah Stone products meet Building Code Requirements?

A.) Yes. Savannah Stone products comply with applicable building code requirements for both residential and commercial applications.
Please refer to our Products Specifications tab.

Q.) How are Savannah Stone products sold?
A.) Flat pieces are sold by the square foot, corner pieces by the linear foot, all other trim pieces are sold by the piece.

Q.) How are Savannah Stone products packaged?
A.) Savannah Stone flats are available on pallets in increments of 50, 100, and 150 square feet.

Q.) Will Savannah Stone products fade?
A.) Savannah Stone incorporates synthetic iron oxide pigment dyes in the base during the casting process.   The base color is found throughout the stone and is visible when stones are cut or trimmed during installation.    As with natural stone and brick there will be some slight fading which is a natural process after years of various weather conditions and exposure to the sun.

Q.) How are Savannah Stone products adhered to wall surfaces?

A.) Savannah Stone recommends that installers use regular types of cement mortar in S or N over a properly prepared substrate.   Please see installation instructions for complete information details.

Q.) Can Savannah Stone products be used on both exterior and interior applications?

A.) YES!  Savannah Stone products are designed for outdoor use and meet or exceed industry requirements for commercial applications.   Our products are designed to stand up to sun, wind, rain, snow, sleet, hail, or whatever mother nature can throw at us.   As a result, our products are fully suitable for use indoors as well.   The flexibility allows you to bring the outside in or the inside out, depending on your color schemes and desired textures.

Q.) How heavy are Savannah Stone products?

A.) The weight varies; yet the approximate weight is 6 to 12 pounds per square foot.

Q.) What maintenance or cleaning is required of Savannah Stone products after installation?
A.) Periodic rinsing to remove surface dust and debris is all that is required.   For areas where heavy dirt/debris is present, the use of a soft brush is recommended.   Savannah Stone products are virtually maintenance free and no harsh chemicals should ever be used to clean the stone.

Q.)  Can I pressure wash Savannah Stone products?

A.) Pressure washing is generally not recommended for any cultured stone, regardless of the manufacturer.   High pressure water can cut into brick, cultured stone, and some softer varieties of quarried stone.

Q.) How many product types are available from Savannah Stone, Inc?

A.) There is a wide variety of products in several different colors to choose from.

Installation of Savannah Stone Products

Q.) Is colored mortar recommended?

A.) In some instances we recommend tinting the mortar to enhance or match the stone color.   It is really an individual choice.

Q.) How are Savannah Stone products cut or trimmed for installation?
A.) Savannah Stone products are easily cut or trimmed using an inexpensive masonry blade either dry cut or wet cut.    Savannah Stone products can also be easily cut or trimmed using a variety of masonry tools including wide-mouth nippers or masonry hatchet.

Q.) What kind of surface is necessary in order to use Savannah Stone products?

A.) Savannah Stone products may be adhered to any structurally sound surface.   We recommend installing stone onto clean untreated surfaces such as wood, plywood, wallboard, masonry, or metal.   For new construction, a stucco-type brown coat preparation is highly recommended for exterior applications.  Please see installation instructions for further information.

Q.) Can Savannah Stone products be applied over other surfaces such as brick or other materials?

A.) Yes, provided the surface is clean and unpainted.   Further information on application and sub rates are given in our installation instructions.

Q.)  Can I attach stone directly to sheetrock?

A.)   For indoor applications only.   We normally recommend attaching metal lathe directly over "green" sheetrock and then using a scratch coat.   For walls covered with normal white sheetrock, the water used in the scratch coat (mortar) will wet the paper and cause damage to the sheetrock.   Therefore, for interior walls with white sheetrock, a moisture barrier such as tar paper should be applied before the metal lathe is attached to the studs.   The tar paper (or other moisture barrier) will protect the sheetrock from water damage during installation of the stone.

Q.)  Can I use "green" sheetrock for outdoor applications of stone veneer?

A.)  No.   Green sheetrock is not designed for long term usage outdoors in the weather and we do not recommend using this product outside.   The numerous penetrations from nails and screws will make the sheetrock very susceptible to water damage and will weaken the structure, particularly if a freeze/thaw cycle is experienced.   The use of a moisture barrier may slow down water damage, but it will not prevent it.   Cinder blocks, cement board, and plywood (with moisture barrier) are recommended for most outdoor applications.

Q.)  How do I attach metal lath over drywall?

A.)  Metal lath should be attached directly to the studs.   Find the studs and use roofing nails or screws to attach lath over the drywall.   In some cases you may need to also staple the metal lath to the drywall, but attaching directly to the studs is highly recommended.

Q.) Can Savannah Stone products be used on fireplace facings or the wall behind a freestanding stove?
A.) Yes, Savannah Stone products have been tested and are classified as a non-combustible material.   For stone installation around fireplaces, local codes must be followed.   Test results revealed zero flame spread and no smoke developed. Before installation around fireplace, please refer to the manufactures installation instructions as well as local building codes.

Q.)  Can Savannah Stone products be used as a backsplash behind a sink or behind a stove?

A.) Yes.   This is a very common installation in residential homes.   We do recommend that you seal the stone after installation for protection from staining and ease of cleaning.   Typically grease splatter can occur above and behind a cooking surface and could easily leave a grease stain on any type of porous surface whether brick, quarried stone, or Savannah Stone products.

The Benefits of Savannah Stone Products

Q.) How do Savannah Stone products compare in cost with natural stone?
A.) The cost between Savannah Stone products and natural stone products is significant.  Natural quarried stone installed can run between $14.00 and $26.00 a square foot whereas Savannah Stone products installed average between $11.00 and $14.00 a square foot.  Installation labor for cultured stone is typically 60% to 80% of installation labor for quarried stone.

Uses for Savannah Stone Products

Q.) Can Savannah Stone products be used on walkways or patios?
A.) Generally our products are engineered and designed to be used as veneer on walls or fireplaces.

Q.) Can Savannah Stone products be used on wall areas adjacent to swimming pools?

A.) Savannah Stone can be used in the same fashion as any other quality lightweight concrete product.   Manufactured stone is porous and some care should be taken in the form of protection with a non-film breathable masonry sealer.   Chlorine and other chemicals can affect the color over a long period of time. When frequently exposed to water, we recommend protection with a non-film breathable masonry sealer.
